Green peafowl is now 'Endangered'

The Green peafowl, which was listed as a Vulnerable species in 2008, has been shifted to the Endangered category in the year 2009 update of the Red List. This illustrates how quickly the situation can go from bad to worse for a species that is already under pressure due to hunting and loss of habitat. It also shows how important it is to monitor the threatened species for population trends on a yearly basis.

'This majestic species has a very rapidly declining and severely fragmented population, primarily owing to intense habitat conversion and high hunting levels. Population trends and further fragmentation are projected to continue.' - IUCN
